Can I put a couple of quotes about a great woman here, who isn't famous, but I'm a great admirer of


Esther Roper - who worked with Selina Cooper of Nelson on many occasions, and later in life against the death penalty.

"Esther Roper was an extremely reticent woman with a marked distaste for personal exposure. She remains almost anonymous behind the organisations through which she worked and seems to have preferred the role of eminence grise to that of platform personality".

Unselfishness, devotion, dogged patience do not often go hand-in-hand with a lively humour (and good humour), a penetrating insight into persons and affairs, and a steady tolerance of ideas and doctines not her own. Frail of body, a rock-like sanity gave her a strength beyond the phsyical and those who visited her, even in illness, came away refreshed from contact with an unclouded spirit".
