Destroy S Arabia for promoting jehad: Naipaul
PTI[ SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2004 04:23:24 AM ]
LONDON: Raking up a controversy, Nobel prize winning author Sir Vidia Naipaul has said countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran which foment religious war must be destroyed.
The 72-year-old author, in an interview published in The Observer on Sunday, however had a word of advice to the people: "Hate oppression, but fear the oppressed."
Naipaul said the thing he saw in the current terrorism was the exulting in other people's death.
"We are told the people who killed the children in Russia were smiling. The liberal voices were ready to explain the reasons for their actions. But this has no good side. It is as bad as it appears," he said.
Asked about a proper response of the West, Naipaul said "well, clearly Iraq is not the place to have gone. But religious war is so threatening to the rest of us that it cannot be avoided.
"It will have to be fought... there are certain countries which foment it, and they probably should be destroyed, actually."
Question : Saudi Arabia?
Naipaul : "I would like to think so, yes."
Question : Iran?
Naipaul : "I think Iran has to be dealt with, too."
Naipaul believes that the world is yet to confront the implications of the rise of Islamic states.
"The blowing up of the twin towers; people could deal with it as an act of terror, but the idea of religious war is too frightening for people to manage. The word used is jehad. We like to translate it as holy war, but really it is religious war," he said.
Hmmmm...how do u suggest we deal with these matters?

Hey Michele, I'd suggest posting up that letter that you wrote to the Nelson Leader during Unite Against Fascism. I would like to read it again, and I think it is a response to this in a way - the everyday, ourselves and what is around us that we can work to change. Best Mitch

Go on then Mitch, just for you:
A MORE TOLERANT TOWN FOR OUR CHILDREN
Dear Nelson Leader,
I am a single parent living in Nelson. I was aware of the Asian community in Nelson when I moved here in 1987, however I was not concerned about this. When my first child was born in 1989 I took her to plenty of 'mums and tots' groups...and later when I returned to work her child minder did the same. One of the groups I attended was at the Civic Centre, Stanley st, Nelson...downstairs they ran ESOL classes to aid Asian women in their command of the english language...and upstairs they ran a creche for the children of both these women and the english/white women. After attending just one or two of the mums and tots sessions at the centre, and seeing the variety of skills which were being taught to the children, from both cultures, I enquired regarding volunteering to assist with the teaching of the Asian ladies...My daughter's childminder then took over looking after her during the sessions whilst I assisted with the teaching. Later my daughter was old enough to see me coming and going to the sessions, but didn't make a fuss when she went upstairs and I stayed down...she met the Asian women and their children and mixed well...the ladies made a great fuss over her red hair, they were fantastic and friendly. We celebrated Eid and Christmas with a party where food from both cultures was provided... My children now attend Catholic schools, the family being mainly Catholic, however there are Asian children there too, and they integrate well...I notice that other multi cultural schools in the area make a point of teaching the children about both cultures and religious celebrations, and also the cultures/religions of other ethnic groups in the area, and I welcome that...I feel that the only way that our town can progress peacefully, and expand educationally and culturally is by remaining multicultured and making the time to mix with each other, partake in each others ceremonies and learn toleration of each others' personal/religious views, parents should be more open minded and take the time to learn about the different ethnic groups, and teach this to their children. I am afraid that the presence of the BNP in Nelson would cause division amongst the differing ethnic groups, I am afraid of the policies that the party may wish to establish should its power increase in parliament in general, and the effects of those policies on currently well integrated multicultural towns/cities...I would urge any parent to use your vote wisely to prevent the BNP from gaining seats in the Pendle area. I would like to add thanks to the many people who visited the United Against Fascism stall held in Nelson town centre on Saturday and who added their names to a petition which stated that the undersigned did not want the BNP in our town...113 names were collected, and some of these people also chose to join the UAF in helping to prevent a repeat of the rise of Fascism which occurred in Europe during the 1930's. Yours, Concerned Parent, Nelson.
