Continuing with the Latin American theme Natasha Gordon and Paul Chatterton wrote a superb little pamphlet on the popular movement in Argentina circa 2001. It is entittled Taking Back Control. A Journey through Argentinas Popular Uprising.
The pamphlet describes the horizontal and anti-hierachical social movements of that period which contested state power. It refers specifically to the piqueteros (who blocked the roads) , cacerolazos (who took part in noisy protests involving the beating of saucepans), escraches (popular autonomous justice), and asambleas (peoples assemblies).
It encompasses a whole myriad of social protest groups including MOCASE (campesino human rights group), MTD (Movimiento de Trabajadores Desocupados- Unemployed Workers) etc. The booklet illustrates the decentralised nature of the movement which rejected authoritarian political parties and gives a fascinating insight into how to organise a "social revolution" from the base upwards.
