Over 50 British public figures call for troops to come home from Iraq 13/09/2005
Leading figures from the world of the arts, science, medicine, music and literature have put their names to a letter calling on Prime Minister Tony Blair to end the illegal occupation of Iraq and bring the troops home.
Over 60 people have signed this letter including singer Maxi Jazz, scientist Richard Dawkins, Lancet Editor Dr Richard Horton and painter John Keane. The letter will be handed in to Downing Street on Thursday 15th September at 11.30am by some of those who have signed the letter.
The letter is part of Stop the War's ongoing campaign to highlight the continuing tragedy of the British Governments policy in Iraq which will culminate in over 100,000 people demonstrating against the war on Saturday 24th September 2005 in Central London.
Brian Eno, one of the co-ordinators of this campaign, will lead the delegation to Number 10. He will be accompanied by Maxi Jazz, Craig Murray, Hilary Rose and Katherine Hamnett and others.
Stop the War Coalition convenor Lindsey German will also be at Downing Street. She explained:
"Two and a half years into this illegal war and we still see no end to the death of innocent civilians, along with the continued deaths of British and US troops. This campaign is about focusing the public's attention on getting the troops home and letting the Iraqi people chose their own democratic future."
