Well I’ll lose no sleep over him being arrested although the BNP will try and use this to enhance their image as an ‘oppressed minority’ and shout about freedom of speech. It’s not clear what he was arrested for. I don’t think it can be for the comment "This wicked, vicious faith has expanded through a handful of cranky lunatics about 1,300 years ago until it's now sweeping country after country" as the new legislation isn’t in place yet. I don’t agree with the idea of outlawing the party as stated by Massoud Shadjareh as that would be counter productive and any law to do it could be used against others. The report states, “The party's anti-immigration stance has won it a handful of local council seats, mainly in poorer areas with large ethnic populations, but it remains on the fringe of politics.” This isn’t exactly true is it? I think most of the BNP seats are actually in ward without a large minority ethnic population and sometimes in quite well-to-do wards at that. Oh just to be picky as well I do wish they wouldn’t use “ethnic” when they mean “ethnic minority”, we all have some sort of ethnicity what ever it is.

I'm more than glad to see them arrested too - but I'd be even happier to see them charged with the offence of Inciting Racial Hatred, but I'm not sure that will follow. Seems like the BNP are already harping on about free speech etc. Looks like Griffin has been arrested for Inciting Racial hatred, contrary to Race Relations Act. The timing of the arrests does look cynical - we should watch what happens at the end of this week in Bradford when others arrested as a result of the documentary are appearing at Bradford Magistrates Court - will they be charged?? I think, like much of the law, the Race Relations Act and particularly the section on Inciting Racial Hatred is full of loopholes, and seems to work effectively for some and not for others. I found this out when I complained about a BNP leaflet which was posted through my door earlier this year before the local elections. This leaflet, I thought was inciting racial hatred and I submitted my complaint to Pendle Borough Council, The CRE, and I wrote to the head of Lancashire Constabularly. The leaflet concerned was a pack of lies inciting racial hatred against asylum seekers particularly. The local CPS did look at my complaint, and I had a visit from a patronising policeman from Burnley Police. They told me I had no case with incitement for Racial Hatred, and would only have a case if the leaflet was encouraging fascists to meet at a certain place, at a certain time to incite racial hatred. I know of other stories in Burnley where the police have been completely unhelpful regarding complaints of racial hatred and incitement to racial hatred - some of those stories are in the Burnley stories section of this website. I think they should have been arrested and charged years ago. I'm sickened by fascists, but I'm equally sickened by the opportunism of all political parties. I agree. Thanks for poppin over, and your support here locally recently Octoberlost. It's been very much appreciated On another note - I have meant to ask you - why was October Lost - titter? Maybe put that answer in another thread - I've some ideas on it myself and have been looking back over some of Alexandra Kollontai's writing recently - would be good to start this thread as I'm thinking some people may be wondering why you're called Octoberlost? Bestest Mitch xx
