Five Minutes Of Silence

Five Minutes Of Silence
Election Day, November 2,2004 11:00 AM
For many voters, the 2004 presidential election poses
a dilemma. They want to replace George Bush, but they
don't have strong feelings for John Kerry. Those
Americans against the US invasion of Iraq find Kerry's
support of the war, and his proposal of sending more
troops there, to be against their beliefs. And yet,
because of the Bush administration's assault against
the constitution, public education, employment, and
the environment, they feel compelled to vote for John
Kerry.
Casting ballots alone will not alter the bellicose
nature of the United States. The victory of either
candidate will reinforce his mistaken belief that the
war in Iraq was correct. President Bush and Senator
Kerry need to be shown that winning an election does
not make war acceptable. We need to inform them that
many Americans are against US policy in Iraq and the
Middle East. We need to tell them that living in the
White House does not give them the right to attack
sovereign nations in our names.
We need to vote with our hearts
Can you spare five minutes of your life on Election
Day, November 2, 2004? That's all you need to do.
Spend five minutes in silence to alert our nation, and
the world, that you disagree with the pre-emptive
attack against a nation that did us no harm. Just
five minutes in silence, sitting in quiet
contemplation, or prayer, or meditation to show that
you say a resounding "NO" to war.
On Election Day, Tuesday, November 2, 2004 at 11:00
AM, wherever you may be, whatever time zone you're in,
stop what you're doing, and take five minutes of your
life to affirm your opposition to war. It doesn't
matter where you are...home, work, school...standing
in line waiting to vote...anywhere...just stop what
you're doing, remain silent, and reflect on a world at
peace, a world without war...a world healed. It
doesn't matter what your religion is. It doesn't
matter whether you are young or old, male or
female...just stop what you are doing at 11:00 AM that
day, and pray, meditate, remember those members of the
military who have died in wars...remember the innocent
thousands who have been killed when countries war with
one another.
You can use those five minutes in silence alone. You
can organize a group to spend those five minutes of
silence together. It doesn't matter. The important
thing is to take five minutes from your otherwise
hectic, chore-filled, multi-tasking life, and remain
silent wherever you may be. This small, yet powerful
act, will send a strong message to the next president
of the United States. Despite the many votes he
receives on Election Day, he will know that many
Americans want him to stop using war as a solution to
the world's problems.
Thoughts often manifest into actions. Taking five
minutes out of your life in quiet thought or
meditation will start the ball rolling. Who
knows...during those five minutes you might discover
something you can do in the pursuit of peace in your
life, or in the lives of your friends, family,
coworkers, or community. The time is yours.
Silence can be deafening.
The world is in its "eleventh hour". Therefore 11:00
AM was chosen as the time when the five minutes of
silence begins. Do we allow war and violence to
perpetuate, or do we take actions, both big and small,
to reverse the ticking clock? It's up to you. It's
painless. And it just might work.
So, please send this message to your friends and
acquaintances. Write about it to your newspapers,
civic groups, and religious organizations. Tell
everyone you know about this simple and effective act:
Five Minutes of Silence
