Harmondsworth - wrecked again "Following the damning report of the prisons inspector this week these events were eerily predictable. These are not the first disturbances at Harmondsworth. Why have lessons not been learnt? If deportees are treated in an inhumane fashion, this sort of unrest is bound to ensue." Nick Clegg Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary Riot squad fights to regain control of immigration detention centre Teams of specialist prison riot squad officers drafted in from across south-east England were last night still battling to regain control of Britain's largest immigration detention centre 18 hours after a disturbance had started. www.ncadc.org.ukWhy the riot started 29.11.2006 04:00 More reasons given by detainees on what caused the riot: Some people have been tortured and they don't get medical care, they get abused by officers, they are kept in detention a long time. Some want to go back to their countries but they are kapt in detention. Some are scared to go back and get beaten at the airport. Some have family here in the UK. If people complain they are put in isolation, you cannot say anything. 'This country is abusing us' they say. noborders For more information on reports from the scene see: www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2006/11/357282.htmlAlso see No Borders Manchester site here www.network23.org/n23/noborders
