Gorbachev to honour Cat Stevens
Singer Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens, will be presented
with a Man of Peace award by ex-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev on
Wednesday.
The 57-year-old, who was refused entry to the US on security grounds
two months ago, is due to accept the honour at a ceremony in Rome.
The Gorbachev Foundation said it was for his dedication to promoting
peace and condemning terrorism.
Past winners include Italian film director Roberto Benigni.
The award is given annually "to a distinguished personage of culture
and entertainment for peace messages, fraternity and integration
between nations".
Islam is chairman of Small Kindness, a charity aims to help families
in troubled regions including Kosovo, Bosnia, Albania, Montenegro
and
Iraq.
In September, he was barred entry to the US on "security grounds"
after his name appeared on a terrorism "watch list". Islam denies
supporting terrorism.
As Cat Stevens, he became known during the 1970s for hits including
Wild World and Morning Has Broken.
But he turned his back on his career in 1977, when he coverted to
Islam.
In recent years, however, he has returned to performing, and has
recorded a version of his 1970 song Father And Son with singer Ronan
Keating, which is due for release in the UK before Christmas.

Now we're not going to be so cynical to say that Yusuf Islam (the
man
formerly known as folk-pop singer Cat Stevens) is going out of his
way to seek publicity, but considering he has a new single coming
out, the dude has had the advantage of having his name in the news a
whole lot lately. First there was that whole suspected terrorist
thing a couple months ago and now Islam is being given an award for…
wait for it… his dedication to eradicating terrorism.
Islam will be honoured by another former enemy of the U.S. — former
Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Gorbachev will give Islam the Man
Of
Peace award at a ceremony tomorrow (November 10) in Rome. The award
is given each year to "a distinguished personage of culture and
entertainment for peace messages, fraternity and integration between
nations." Past high profile recipients have included Roberto
Benigni,
the Italian filmmaker responsible for Life Is Beautiful.
Although Islam was vilified by U.S. authorities for allegedly
contributing funds to terrorist groups (his case is still "under
review"), the Man Of Peace Award recognizes work that Islam has done
to help those affected by violence. Most notably, Islam is the
chairman of Small Kindness, a group that helps families in war-torn
regions.
On the musical front, Islam has kept relatively quiet since becoming
a Muslim and changing his name in 1977, save for a few performances
in recent years. He's currently preparing to enter the race for the
#1 U.K. Christmas single by recording a new version of his 1970
hit "Father And Son" with British pop star Ronan Keating.
