I write to interest you in a book that I have published, now in it’s second edition.
ANARCHISTS IN SOCIAL WORK: KNOWN TO THE AUTHORITIES
Reviewing it for Community Care, David O’Driscoll, assistant director, Respond wrote “ The authors… feel that anarchist ideas are often ignored or misrepresented….struggles as social workers or trade (unionists). The book promotes attempts to move social work thinking away from a more authoritarian, controlling (method) to an empowering one…. historical account of anarchist ideas in social work”.
FREEDOM, the leading Anarchist paper reported that, “the authors eschew the temptation to portray themselves as fearless subversives and instead patiently describe and dissect the complex, ambivalent social work roles they have played”.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Stemming from my 24 years experience as a social worker, it’s a controversial account of how anti-authoritarian and political ideas have been accommodated in social work practice.
Key points are:
. It’s the first book on radical social work (in the u.k.) for 26 years,
. aimed at professional social workers, and the general reader interested in social issues,
. it has first hand accounts by anarchists of their experiences in professional social work,
. reflecting aspects of social policy and ways in which they were seen between the 1960’s – 1990’s,
. it tells how values, visions and ethical standards are squared with the demands of social work practice.
. Profiles of the contributors to this unique book, and retail purchase details are on our web site, www.anarchistsinsocialwork.org.uk . A s.a.e will get you a copy of our hand-out-synopsis
In spite of it’s specialist nature it has been very successful. Mainstream publishers are now being asked to consider purchasing this work. Any advice would be much appreciated. If your library orders directly from me, it will cut out middle-men book sellers, be cheaper and quicker. Best regards, Martin S. Gilbert.
