News from A Good Read
Readers days and special events, readers holidays, new-look libraries, good independent bookshops
and great reads that are good for you.
Readers’ Days
The 7 Books, 7 Cities Project (UK)
A number of towns and cities across the UK are individually aiming to encourage everyone in town to read the same book. For example Kirklees (Halifax and Huddersfield area) will be reading Lion Boy by Zizou Corder throughout 2006 and Oxford will be reading Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited.
For news of other cities taking part, and associated readers days go to the 7 Books, 7 Cities website.

Readers’ Holidays
“A chance to get together and have a real confab over books. A group of people sitting around a table... eating, sharing, laughing. Like a readers day but it lasts at least 3 days: giving you time to read, relax and think.”
A Good Read Ltd will be starting readers holidays this summer. The theme and location of each holiday will depend on the book(s) being read. We are starting with the beautiful South Pennines around Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire. Suggestions for books gratefully received but we have already been asked to include Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath or the Bröntes. We will of course be setting off onto the moors to get the full effect! Sign up below to be kept up to date.
Reading is good for you
“Bibliotherapy”, “Books on prescription” schemes, there is no doubt that reading is good for you.
If you haven’t yet discovered
www.findmeagoodread.com now is the time to do so. We can recommend a good read tailored to suit you. We can also point you to your nearest library or independent bookshop where you can find self help books, books about particular illnesses, books that inspire you or fiction that just makes you feel better.
www.findyourlibrary.co.uk/findyourlibrary/Book of the month:
I have just read Astonishing Splashes of Colour by Clare Morrall about a woman who has synaesthesia (she sees colours when she thinks of words and memories) and who has had to come to terms with a great deal of sadness, which she does in part by using her colours. It is an easy read, and full of surprises. It answers its own questions about her past but will also give you a lot to think about. I loved the language and the otherness about this book.
