Might as well introduce myself. My name is Ashley (Male), I live in Barrowford and I am a whole 17 years of age. I like music quite a lot and most of my time is spent listenting to or going to gigs, but anyway. I didnt realise there were any anarchists or such in this immediate area, and I would love to get involved with anything I can time permitting.
Can you tell me a bit about what the situation is around Burnley / Pendle, groups, campaigns etc. Thanks !
----x ashuri

Hi Ashley, thanks for the introduction to yourself.
Well there is still a Burnley Anarchist movement in Burnley and Pendle, although it is quite small. We generally meet on Thursdays at The Burnley League, which is close to Parliament Street in Burnley, however the meetings are a bit irregular at the moment due to other activities members are pursuing.
Check these boards out regularly for updates on the next meeting dates, and for any other activities we attend as a group, such as the N.A.N (Northern Anarchists Network) Conferences, there's one coming up on 8th July at Manchester and you're welcome to come along to that with us. If you need transport we have a couple of members with cars who can help out. Please let me know if you're interested.
We're also involved in T.A.M.S, the local campaign against the dangerous placement of mobile phones in the UK, and Mitch attends many of their meetings.
We started a local branch of SayNo2ID, but that was late last year and was interrupted by the concern over the closure of wards at Burnley General Hospital. We hope to resume meetings for that campaign asap.
In Pendle we have recently been concerned with the campaign for the Karim family who are possibly facing deportation back to Pakistan after being in Nelson on Religious Asylum. We are following any updates on their situation and will act accordingly whenever new news is received.
Please do continue to post and let me know if there are any issues you feel the Burnley Anarchists ought to get involved with, or if you wish to just meet with us and find out more.

Hi there Ashuri, Good to hear from you. Michele and I have got friends pretty involved in the music scene round here and we've been talking seriously about organising music dos ourselves in Pendle and perhaps Burnley. We've a few musicians around us - what gigs have you been to recently? Wot are your fav venues around here - reckon you could help us here with a little advice. Have you got a few contacts with local bands?? Someone recommended the Palatine Club in Nelson recently. What's going on in Barrowford at the moment. We're in money raising mode at the moment, trying to plan for music and other events in the area raising money through Jumble sales and car boot sales. If you're going to any good gigs in the area - be great if you could bob them up on this forum, and we'll come along to them. Trafalgar Pub in Nelson is our local, and some band is playing there on the 1st July - can't remember who though. Welcome anywise - tell us more about the local music scene. My bloke Cotty plays a mean guitar - written some good songs too. byeeeeeeeee Mitch

Sounds like quite a good idea actually . As music venues go, it seems to have gotten considerably better in Burnley itself. First theres Sanctuary Rock Bar, which seems to be one of the most consistent http:/www.myspace.com/sanctuaryrockbar and has some of the best local bands playing a lot of nights. There is also Hellbound Rock Club www.hellboundrockclub.com/, allthough I dont they they do as many gigs as Sanctuary. The Carlton pub (Standish Str.) also seem to be a favourite music venue, they have a nice area for bands to play. They even have a night at the Muni, Colne every once a month (for charity I think). As for the Palatine club, I went to a great night they had there, allthough the venue is a bit crap really, like somewhere you might have a wedding on a budget. Two of my favourite local bands (allthough I am biased because I do know them) are Oversight myspace.com/oversight and The Pristines myspace.com/thepristinesband. Both bands can pull in quite a large croud, Oversight have been headlining at bigger venues such as Academy 3 in Manchester, and The Pristines have a large following of younger people from the Pendle area. Perhaps the 'biggest' local band is Bashphelt myspace.com/bashphelt , they recently got voted on T4's Popworld website to be the best unsigned band, and got a gig shown on the TV show (at the muni .. I was there . Click around on the websites, the Oversight one has a list of links to other bands. I can contact lots of these bands myself (most likely using the website myspace, very useful, and lots of bands and kids use it). Both Oversight and Pristines are playing the Carlton on Friday, and at Sanctuary next friday, you are welcome to come along (ill' do a post with more info). Anyway, Barrowford. Ive only just moved here from Nelson, not too much going on from as far as I can see.

Hi Ashuri...thanks for all the info and the sites to check out. Pleased to hear you recommend The Sanctuary along with The Carlton, I haven't really heard much about Hellbound yet, is that one of the newer clubs that's been springing up in Burnley recently?
I'm not sure of the name of the band playing at the Trafalgar either, but I do know it includes the word Monkey/s? and is supposed to be very popular in Nelson, I think they won Battle of the Bands once? I'm sure you know who I'm talking about...lol.
Btw, you're the same age as my daughter, which school in Nelson did you attend? You might know of her or some of her mates?
