SHOCK OF THE NEW/TRIUMPH OF THE UGLY:
MEETING CALLED BY MANCHESTER SOCIAL FORUM, the MANCHESTER ELECTRICIANS & TAMESIDE TUC: To be held at the FRIENDS MEETING HOUSE, mOUNT sTREET (off Albert Square), MANCHESTER on April 7th, 2005 ~ starts 7.30pm.
CHAIR: PAUL ARNOLD OF 'NORTHERN VOICES'.
SPEAKERS INCLUDE:
SUE MACHIN.........BARRISTER & ADVOCATE at the INDUSTRIAL TRIBUNAL for the Manchester electricians.
HILDA PALMER........Greater Manchester HAZARDS.
STEVE ACHESON......MANCHESTER ELECTRICIAN.
ALEC McFadden........TUC/JCC.
JASON ADDY..............SAVE SPODDEN VALLEY ASBESTOS CAMPAIGN.
ALSO INVITED IS THE SPANISH GENERAL CONFEDERATION OF LABOUR (CGT).
This winter The Winsor Tower Block in Madrid was burnt to a crisp after a suspected short-circuit and the new building at The Edge in Salford had a fire that led to the sacking of local labour. The Manchester electricians' dispute that began in May 2003, was about health & safetyand the employment of local labour. April 7th, is the last day of theier Remedies Hearing at the Industrial Tribunal.
The Manhester City Council is pinning its faith on salvation through building design - Spanish cities like Barcelona are their model. Yet, in February, 1,000 citizens of Barcelona were on the streets demanding 'More Cement/Less Scandals' after damage to their houses caused by work on a new Metro station at Carmel. This is not the first scandal this city has seen.
Meanwhile, in Rochdale, Lancashire, developers plan to build an urban village on on the site of a former asbestos factory. And there are now threats to demolish communities in this country at the rate of 800,000 houses a year.
GOD SAVE US FROM DEVELOPERS, PLANNERS AND POLITICIANS.
