Following a pretty bittersweet 2003 in which my brother Fran and his girlfriend Michelle 1st cemented their relationship by moving in together, then suffered the tragic loss of Michelle's eldest son John in a road accident, and the loss of Fran's wife Lavinia to breast cancer, in 2004 they have managed to find happiness.
Yesterday they were wed at the Higher Trapp Hotel in Simonstone surrounded by friends and family...
It was a fantastic, fun day...the usual tears were shed as they exchanged vows, plus a few giggles at fluffed lines and anecdotal stories from the registrar!
The ceremony began at 12.30pm and was followed at 2pm by a reception for approx 50 people. A roast beef dinner was served for the carnivores, and a vegetarian pastry for the veggies, also a lentil and carrot soup starter and a drambruie laced chocolate mousse for dessert. Speeches were made under the influence of helium balloons!! very very funny...
There followed a break of about two and a half hours during which the newlyweds relaxed in their bridal suite, and everyone else got drunk! Then came the evening 'do'.
My brother was one of the original 70's punks and anarchists, so of course it would follow that his wedding 'do' would be a little anarchic too...or so was the promise...however, I'm sure the most anarchic thing about it was that the bride and groom's first dance was to the accompaniment of Andy Williams singing 'Happy Holiday'...lol. The rest of the music was a mix of classic 70's motown and tasteful 'other' music including The Clash's Rock the Kasbah and the Rolling Stone's Sympathy for the Devil, amongst others. The evening ended with most of the attendees jumping around to various 'dance' tracks. My son Daniel thoroughly enjoyed himself, throwing himself around the dance floor virtually all night, with his new cousins...and getting the odd smooch with the chief bridesmaid! For Becki it was a quieter affair as she currently has her leg in plaster so wasn't able to join in the dancing...I, of course, just HAD to sit and keep her company...(good excuse for me not to dance..lol).
Most of the family had left by about 10.30pm however me Becki and Daniel stayed on and booked a taxi for 11.30pm...unfortunately the taxi driver got lost and finally arrived at midnight...so we arrived home, tired but happy at 12.30am...
