“I met lots of people who really valued what I had to offer”. “LETS helped me to buy the luxuries I couldn’t usually afford”. EAST LANCS LETS www.lets.coop Burnley Lets scheme has now being re-launched as East Lancs Lets. We currently have about 60 members, and a directory packed with offers and wants, including gardening, workshops, IT tuition, van hire, dog walking and pet care and more. Anyone in East Lancs can join! Everyone has valuable skills and goods to share! LETS stands for Local Exchange Trading Scheme, and Lets is about local people exchanging goods, skills and services with each other without the need of money! LETS is a great way for people to trade goods and services. We don't use money, we trade in 'Lonks' (Lonks being a common Lancashire Sheep round these parts!) It works on the idea that everyone has valuable skills and goods to share. Offers and requests in the past have included childcare, transport, food, DIY, tuition, housework, gardening and IT. LETS is a great way of bringing people together and keeping your wealth in the area that you live! When you join you’ll get your own personal account number. You give us a list of services and skills you wish to offer in trade, and things that you need doing for example, I've had a new doorbell fitted through Lets, plus my leaking porch is now fixed! A members’ directory of available skills, goods and services is drawn up – which is updated quarterly. Members trade directly with each other, initially by phone or through socials – but we are also hoping to make this possible on-line through our website. We will also be holding lots of socials and trading events, so you can get to know other members. Keep checking back as I'll be posting dates of socials on this web forum. INTERESTED? For more information, and to join and receive an application form, please contact Carole Pilling on Tel: 0845 4569264, or email m.simmons230@ntlworld.com, or write to us at East Lancs Lets, c/o New Era Enterprises, 23 St James’s Row, Burnley, BB11 1EY and we’ll send you a membership pack. We’re currently developing our website – www.lets.coopBest wishes. Michelle Simmons (Mitch) East Lancs Lets

Thanks for letting us know about this scheme Mitch, is your organisation in contact with any of the other trading schemes around the country as it would be great to advertise their details too, as obviously we have members who live in other parts of the UK who would benefit from these schemes?
I'm looking forward to receiving my users' directory asap, as my house looks like it could do with a real make-over...lol.

Information on Marsden
Marsden, where Luddites met in inns and the market place, is not only a fascinating place for those interested in the history of the industrial revolution, it is set in the Marsden Moor Estate. This beautiful moor land is cared for by the National Trust and is home to classic moor land birds such as the curlew and the snipe. Excellent tougher walking country or more pleasant walks along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal towpath running conveniently between Marsden and Slaithwaite (with ample pubs, restaurants and cafes at both ends!)
Marsden Town Centre
When you park up by the railway station (which is FREE), you will see a National Trust information point which is an excellent starting point. From here you can obtain the 'Marsden and Tunnel End' trail guide which is most useful in getting about town! There are many buildings of interest relating particularly to Marsden's expansion during the industrial revolution. The main high street - Peel Street is dotted with gift shops, pubs and cafes. For great real ale try the pub on the corner, seen opposite which brews its own ale on site - delicious!!!
The Mikron Theatre Company (www.mikron.org.uk) is a registered charity and is the best known touring theatre company relating to canal and waterways themes - although it performs a whole range of drama, often with musical connections. This touring theatre company has a long history, originating from an original small group who toured on the Tyseley Narrowboat. The company still tours nationally by narrow-boat and does road tours specifically in Lancashire and Yorkshire. Their remit is to bring theatre to people who don't think of themselves as theatre-goers. They often perform at the Marsden Mechanics on Peel Street, which is their base. Check out their website for upcoming performances. The box office number is 01484 843701
Huddersfield Narrow Canal & Standedge Tunnel
With the coming of transport - rail and canal - to this remote spot, industrial growth was inevitable. The building of the canal was filled with problems (see the Huddersfield Narrow Canal page), but the vision was finally realised when the whole canal, including the magnificent Standedge Tunnel, was opened finally in 1811. A trip through the Standedge Tunnel is highly recommended to experience this amazing achievement of engineering. The tunnel is 7 feet wide and 3 _ miles long and used to take 'leggers' approximately 4 hours to push a narrow-boat through lying on their backs and using their legs only. (There's a picture of the record holder on the second floor of the Standedge Visitors Centre who apparently did it in 1 hour and 25 minutes!) Marsden, Slaithwaite and Railways The rail link from Manchester to Huddersfield (with the new line from Stalybridge to Huddersfield) was finally completed in July 1849 to much celebration. Initially there was only one Standedge rail tunnel - a single track which suffered several accidents. Later, however, a second tunnel was opened in 1871 and another tunnel through Standedge was begun in 1890. The 1890 tunnel was this time wide enough to lay a double track. The building of these rail tunnels meant extra supports were need for the canal. You can see these arch supports if you take a trip by narrow-boat through the Standedge canal tunnel!) Along the canal towpath from Marsden you can walk up to Slaithwaite which, with its wharves and warehouses became a major distribution point for the upper part of the valley. This area was regarded as a key woollen producer.
best Mitch

Hey! Mitch..don't be too sure about those pix of mine..I saw how many pixels your camera had compared to my little one!!!
Anyway, as Mitch said, we all had a brilliant weekend full of canal walks, discovery walks around Marsden village...pub crawls, a visit to the theatre...and lovely accommodation...
The lady in charge of The Rawson Centre where we stayed was a great person...she didn't make a fuss about the reduced numbers in our group, in fact allowed us to spread ourselves around the rooms more as nobody else was staying that evening...and she cooked us all a wonderful vegetarian breakfast...yummy!!!
I will post some piccies later and let them speak for themselves...
The play we saw, Pedal Power was very interesting, humorous and touching too...it told the story of the rise of the NCCC...National Clarion Cycle Club, and was set both in the present day (fictional characters) and in the past (featuring key characters from the NCCC)...the songs the group performed were wonderful and fun...

Decided against a buffet...
Must cover £25 fee for cleaning venue after the event..however discussed with Sally re using some of £300 currently in Lets Bank Account funds (non publicity money) for doing so, and to possibly cover any shortfall in payment to artists as Sal and Carole thought the Xmas 'do' would be an excellent publicity vehicle.

Brilliant minutes Michele, you're the best! Apologies for confusion over date of AGM/next trading event - it is THURSDAY, 9TH DECEMBER AT THE THOMPSON CENTRE, BURNLEY That was my fault - classic Mitch goes cuckoo!!!!! I'll email across email contact list for core group - so you can forward them out by email as well. On Christmas Do at UPSI/Accrington - Friday, 17th December/7pm-1pm - just rung them to check numbers - that room will take 100 people so that's good more than we thought. Also, they have CD players and a good sound system in place in the room, so all we have to do is put the compilations together for later in the evening and we're away. See you monday for more chats on this. Byeee Mitch xx ;D

(To Carole - thanks for that precious little songbook!) "For wider vision, fuller life; For hearts responsive to the call Of loving service, each for all, We praise and thank our Lets Scheme. No longer bound by four close walls, We take our part in wider care For public good, that all may share The message of our Lets Scheme. With freedom from a narrow view Of life, and home, and family, These sweetest human joys shall be Extended in our Lets Scheme. We seek release from needless pain To lighten human suffering; To all with heavy burdens bring The cheering of our Lets Scheme. We move towards a country new, When all we hope and plan shall live In full expression, and shall give Completeness to our Lets Scheme. So every year brings brighter ray Of hope and courage to us all ; And clearer sounds the stirring call To service in our Lets Scheme." News on East Lancs Lets AGM & Social, 9th Dec 2004 We had a great East Lancs Lets AGM & Social last night - I'll post the minutes up shortly from the AGM. Lots of trading going on - and some great ideas for forthcoming socials, including Janet's suggestion of cycling! (forgive size of picture - i've reduced on photobucket - but am just getting to grips with a more up-to-date version of paintshop pro - it's a conspiracy - some idiot IT guru has been tweeking with it and made it more complicated - I hate IT grrrrr) We had a presentation from a chap from the co-op who funded our lap top (see above picture, note the sheep!),. Next Lets social is the xmas do! Might be an idea Michele for us to go to Si cafe early next week - and hand out a few leaflets around Accrington. Andrew and Nicky are putting up posters around Accrington, most who were at the AGM will be coming to the xmas do. I'm checking today about children being allowed in as Janet wants to bring her daugher also. ADDITIONAL NOTES TO THIS AGM FROM LAST YEAR: MINUTES...JUST A TAD LATE ;D East Lancs Lets AGM MINUTES, 9TH DECEMBER 2004, 5-6 pm BOBBIN BAR, THOMPSON CENTRE, BURNLEY Members present: Carole Pilling, Tess McMahon, Janet Bottrell, Sally Parnell, Reg Hall, Michelle Simmons, Mel Wood, Nicholas Cooper, Louise Morgan, Andrew Saczek Apologies: Kath Howley, Farah Naeem, Michele Cryer 2. Reports on Last Year Tess gave brief overview of the last year. We initially received a Community Cohesion grant to kickstart East Lancs Lets. This enabled the employment of an outreach worker – Kath Baker, and computer development person – Michelle Simmons. At the end of the outreach/computer development, culminating in large social and trading event and members meeting at Burnley Wood One Stop Shop, East Lancs Lets was pushing towards 50 members. Sal gave a report on the financial situation. £300.00 was brought forward from Burnley Lets Scheme. The Community Cohesion Grant was for £5000.00, and this as previously mentioned was spent on Outreach, workshops, purchasing a computer database system, some outlay on web domain name – www.lets.coop, and bits of publicity including leaflets and posters. A report had to be submitted (November) on how the money was spent. 3. Decisions: a) Membership fees for individuals and organisations for next year: It was agreed that membership fees for next year would rise a small amount to cover costs to the following: Unwaged - £3.50 per year Waged - £7.00 per year Also agreed were the following membership costs: Unwaged Families - £3.50 Waged Families - £7.00 Small Organisations - £10.00 (with accompanying – Donations welcome) Large Organisations - £20.00 (with accompanying – Donations welcome) b) Ratify constitution and rules The constitution and rules were ratified! 4. Volunteers and Elections for: a) Core Group (organising group) The following put themselves forward and were agreed – Cath Howley, Sally Parnell, Michelle Simmons, Carole Pilling, Nicholas Cooper, Andrew Saczek, Michele Cryer. New members for the core group always welcome if anyone fancies coming on board! b) Advisory Group (available on request) The following put themselves forward and agreed: Farah Naeem, Louise Morgan, Tess McMahon, Kath Rowley It was suggested that the Advisory Group might join core group meetings every quarter. 5. Ideas and plans for the coming year. – Funding a) Plans around Community Programme Grant received – focus with this latest funding is Burnley. A leaflet is planned shortly, and core group have agreed design. Further funding received to pay for more web development so that members can exchange on line and search the database on-line. b) Community Apprentice Scheme – Sally has applied for this so that we may have someone in with skills to offer lets – and push out with more outreach and help us with administration and so forth. c) Do members think it would be a good idea to apply for small amounts of funding in the areas not covered by the Community Programme Grant, ie. Pendle, Hyndburn, Rossendale. Tess introduced – reminded that Rossendale Lets Scheme was not functioning and that some funds may come across to us which would mean we could do more in Rossendale. Members agreed that it would in practice be a good idea to apply for funding for areas like Accrington, Rossendale and Pendle. Michelle suggested that we should focus on areas where core group members were, eg. Nelson, Accrington and Burnley – because with funding comes extra work and we could face overload if core group members take on too much. Also, it’s easier to work in your own area where you already know people and are working on familiar territory etc. (might be an idea to discuss further at next core group meeting. Looking at core group – Accrington, Nelson and Burnley seem to be the main areas represented – would make sense to focus on those?) 6. Any other business – no. DATE FOR NEXT CORE GROUP MEETING: Monday 10/01/05 at Michele's house (if that date still suits ok Michele.6.30pm.) (PS. Does anyone know a good plumber/handy person. Me kitchen floor currently rather wet – and there’s a faint dripping noise behind the sink cupboard? Eeeek.)

This event took place, successfully, yesterday.
Current members of Lets exchanged goods and were encouraged to contact each other and other members from the Member List to trade goods and services frequently...
Some members of the public visited and joined Lets, and begun trading immediately.
The Burnley Express sent along a photographer and a reporter, and the story should be printed in the coming week's edition of the Express...
Well Done all concerned.

East lancs Lets has been advised (during a media workshop) to sell itself to the public.
It is has been suggested that we go Nationwide, via Press, Radio and TV to promote our funded Project 114/14 which is a project aimed at recruiting more members of the local communities to join Lets systems, and to work 'behind the scenes' more within those systems so that they do not just crumble.
An implementation plan is in order of how we hope to achieve completion of this plan in the time given, until November 2005, and now we just need willing volunteers from the current membership, or from people who are interested in joining the scheme and exchanging their goods and skills for credits known as 'lonks' instead of for cash/currency/money, to aid us in achieving it...either by extending the amount of tradings/exchanges they have been involved with, or by helping us out behind the schenes, working on various types of material we need to present to the media...photos of members exchanging their skills or displaying their goods, help with producing flyers and newsletters. Any skills would be most appreciated and you will be credited lonks for your time taken and skills exchanged.
The East Lancs Lets scheme has been working nicely, as have others around the country. One is Scotland is particularly successfull, having all 345 families in the area contributing.
Please let me know if you are interested in joining the scheme and I will email you the relevant info. sheets and documents for joining.

Yo Shell, just had an idea on Lets, and thought I'd get it up before I forgot it. Was just thinking that as this East Lancs Lets website is taking ages, what we could do in the meantime which wouldn't mean too much work is set up a web forum like the Burnley Voice, but it would be for East Lancs Lets only - for members to chat on, get to know each other, put on new updates to directory. Reckon it could take off and help to build trust and a bit of confidence between some members who could get on line (that's about 3/4 of membership). Just an idea - titter. Could chat about it Sat. I know that other forum that you set up didn't take off. But if we did an East Lancs Lets one, and sent out a mailout, and you could be superb moderator again it could take off.

Great idea Mitch, I can email the peeps who're already online about it and a general mail out can be sent too...perhaps we could persuade a few people to at least get email addresses at their libraries just to use for Lets if they don't normally have one...would be so much easier corresponding with them all...even newsletters could be emailed! now wouldn't THAT be a saving...
