Here’s a portion of a discussion the present and future of Pop and Pop artists. This is section of the discussion dealing with gay artists which leads to comments on BZ and Stephen. The full article appears in the latest edition of Attitude Magazine (at least the latest edition in the U.S.) This edition is devoted to Pop Music with Geri Halliwell on the cover.
Participants:
AC – Anthony Crank, is a UK Journalist
JJ – Jeremy Joseph is the owner of G-A-Y, A popular nightclub in London which features live appearances of chart toppers. He also is a friend of Stephens.
AP – Andrew (Phixx) Kinlochan is an openly gay member of the pop group Phixx.
LW – Loiuis Walsh
MW – Mark Wood, London DJ?
Attitude: When Stephen Gately came out he had his boyfriend. It seemed the media accepted that because (they) were virtually married.
AC: Yeah, they were doing photo shoots in OK! With Dogs and things.
JJ: Let's be honest here. Stephen only came out because someone was about to sell a story to the tabloids.
LW: Can I put it on record just for once, I did not know he was gay when I gave him the job in Boyzone. Hand on heart!
JJ: How didn't you know, he was so camp?
AC: Didn't you marry him off to one of Bellefire at one point?
LW: I married him off to everybody. I married him off to Mandy Smith, and that made him feel happier because all the other boys were being pictured with girls and he felt less pressure. I'm meeting him tonight, he's actually a very good friend of mine still.
JJ: There was the fact he had Eloy on his arm when he came out, did that make it more palatable for people?
LW: It helped him, and he was our only concern at the time. In the early days of Boyzone he used to say he would almost commit suicide if it came out. We were so,so worried about him. He was so paranoid. It was a different time back then. He was Irish, Catholic, working class. But he was always professional and good about it. And Jeremy always liked him.
JJ: I always used to fancy him because I knew he was gay, I just thought it was so obvious.
LW: I really didn’t know, how terrible was that?

JJ: Well, they all looked like they were gay to me. Especially Ronan. Not so much now, but they could have been a gay couple.
