Big Gay Read Voting Extended to 15 March 2006!
Thought you’d run out of time to vote for your favourite gay book?
Luckily for you, the Big Gay Read deadline has been extended to the 15th March 2006, following increasing enthusiasm for the list of literary giants, as Borders and Blackwells bookstores nationwide joined hundreds of libraries and independents (like Gay’s The Word and News From Nowhere) in promoting the campaign during February’s LGBT History Month.
But who will you vote for? Has the award success of Brokeback Mountain reminded you how much you love Annie Proulx’s novella? Or are you still loving classics like Tales of The City, Tipping the Velvet and The Long Firm?
With over 100 titles reviewed and recommended on the Big Gay Read website there’s plenty to choose from!
To vote, simply go to www.biggayread.com. Each vote will enter a draw to win a set of 21 Big Gay Read Recommended Books!
The winner of The Big Gay Read will be announced at the first ever Big Gay Read Literature Festival in Manchester, May 2006, as part of the queerupnorth International Festival (7-28 May 2006).

¡Viva! 12th Spanish and Latin American Film Festival
¡Viva! 12th Spanish and Latin American Film Festival returns to Cornerhouse for ten action-packed days & nights of Hispanic film between Thu 9 – Sun 19 March.
This year’s festival features a number of features films with lesbian and gay appeal including a special spotlight on La movida, the music and creative youth movement of post-Franco 80s Spain that questioned received norms around sexuality and gender, and one of its most famous sons, the Oscar winning director, Pedro Almodóvar.
Below are a selection of the great films happening over the festival:
PEPI, LUCI, BOM Y OTRAS CHICAS DEL MONTÓN (18), 80 mins, Subtitled
11 March 2006, 4pm & 12 March 2006, 3.55pm
PEPI, LUCI, BOM Y OTRAS CHICAS DEL MONTÓN (Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls on the Heap), Pedro Almodóvar’s feature début, is the first of movida movies, set in the midst of it all, and featuring a who’s who of its denizens. Pepi tries to buy off a cop with a snog and winds up raped. Her revenge is to use friend and musician Bom to unleash wifey’s S&M lesbian tendencies. Made on the cheap with a punk aesthetic, many of Almodóvar’s later interests are already evident. Look out for the director’s cameo during the ‘General Erections’…
ENTRE TINIEBLAS (15), 116 mins, Subtitled
11 March 2006, 1.50pm & 12 March 2006, 1.45pm
The Sisters of Perpetual Motion have nothing on the cast of characters of Pedro Almodóvar’s ENTRE TINIEBLAS (Dark Habits)! A nightclub singer in a bit of drug trouble takes refuge in a convent where the nuns are known as Sister Rat, Sister Manure, and Sister Sin and each has her own special talent…
UN A_O SIN AMOR (18), 96 mins, Subtitled
11 March 2006, 8.25pm & 13 March 2006, 8.15pm
UN A_O SIN AMOR (A Year Without Love), directed by Anahi Berneri, winner of the Teddy Bear prize for Best Gay Film at Berlin Film Festival (2005). UN A_O is an “uncompromising, densely textured portrayal of one man dealing with loneliness and AIDS” – Berlin jury. Pablo is a writer living with his aunt and seeking a way to keep his illness at bay. He’s also seeking love, through ads and nights out to bars. Then he finds himself involved in the underground world of Buenos Aires leather bars and the men who frequent them – including one in particular.
LABERINTO DE PASIONES (18), 99 mins, Subtitled
12 March 2006, 4pm & 14 March 2006, 8.15pm
LABERINTO DE PASIONES (Labyrinth of Passion) is “A home movie for the movida set, a glamorous clash of frocks and jocks (and jocks in frocks) in a Madrid peopled by drug-takers, pop stars, wannabes, terrorists and sex maniacs.” (Time Out). It’s Antonio Banderas’ film début and also features footage of director Pedro Almodóvar performing in his actual duo, Fanny and McNamara.
20 CENTIMETROS (18), 112 mins, Subtitled
17 March 2006, 8.30pm & 19 March 2006, 6.15pm
20 CENTIMETROS (20 Centimetres), from Ramón Salazar, is a bright and brash musical dealing with darker themes. It’s the story of Marieta, who works as a prostitute and dreams of losing the unique 20 cm reminder of her maleness that she’s struggling to get rid of. The wonderful cast (including Najwa Nimri and Rossy de Palma) deliver the musical numbers with great panache as both Spanish and US pop numbers get a quirky, queer makeover. Director Ramon Salazar may well be in attendance to introduce the film and do a Q&A on Fri 17 March at 8.30pm.
