(Lancashire Evening Telegraph, Wed, 17 Nov, 2004, p.7 FIRMS NAMED AND SHAMED)
In Burnley, nine companies were hit with fines totalling £273,000 in financial year 2003/04.,,
This year's figures make the North West the second highest region in the country for Health and Safety violations.
Named and Shamed Burnley and Pendle companies include:
LANCASHIRE COUNTY ENGINEERING and ABLE TOOL AND PLANT HIRE
"A Worker was crushed in February 1999 when a dumper overturned at Thursden Valley Picnic Area, with Lancashire County Engineering Services fined £100,000 and Able Tool and Plant Hire £3,000".
EATON ENGINEERING "Eaton Engineering was fined £30,000 after an employee at Peel Mill, in Gannow Lane, was killed by a falling electrical control panel in February 2001".
SMURFIT UK "Smurfit UK was fined £1000,000 following the death of an employee who was dragged into machinery at the paper mill on Ashfield Road, Calder Vale in January 2000".
In Pendle five firms have been fined a total of £48,000.
GRAHAM ENGINEERING, EDWARD STREET, NELSON "A welder was asphyxiated by gas at the base of a bin he was welding in January 2000 with Graham Engineering, Edward Street, Nelson".
NORPOL RECYCLING, CHARLES STREET, NELSON "Norpol Recycling, Charles Street, Nelson was fined £25,000 after an employee fell trying to tip waste on to a conveyor in December 2001 and died from a head injury".
Are there links in the area between a struggling engineering industry, cutting costs where they can, no doubt with appalling employee relations, probably high numbers of casual workers who receive little training.
Needs further investigation this.

You're right Mitch, it certainly does warrant further investigation...it's horrendous to hear of these sort of accidents in the current century!

CASTLE CEMENT, CLITHEROE - AGAIN!!!!!!!!! If a company is demonstrating a complete disregard for the environment, and for the local community, then it will clearly have as little regard for it's own employees. Accidents at Castle Cement, Clitheroe are frequent. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lancashire/4403928.stmwww.thisislancashire.co.uk/lancashire/clitheroe/news/NEWSCROE4.htmlCastle Cement in Clitheroe is a big Burnley employer, and has been identified for many years by Friends of the Earth representatives as a company with an appauling record on the environment, and on health and safety. For Castle Cement's appauling record see here: www.cank.org.uk/CATReports.htmlwww.foe.co.uk/resource/press_releases/19980814000159.html"Friends of the Earth has published a report by independent consultants which highlights the Environment Agency's failure to adequately control the notorious Castle Cement plant located in a valley in Clitheroe. The report reveals that the plume from the plant is grounding on nearby homes, schools and a community hospital, making life a misery for local residents [contacts available]. It also reveals that since the Environment Agency allowed the plant to burn toxic wastes there has been increases in releases of particulates and heavy metals. The report states that“the problems at Castle [Cement] are a good case study of what can happen when regulation is ineffective and too industry focussed”. Castle Cement featured in Friends of the Earth's league table of most polluting factories due to large releases of the toxic compound dioxins (the league table of 100 most polluting factories is available)." www.foe.co.uk/resource/press_releases/20000401000155.html

Is anybody in or around Clitheroe gathering comments/complaints from the people affected, to present to whomever can alter the situation there?
