We've known that Tesco, that monster mult-national is a renowned unscrupulous employer creaming off profits off the back of homeworkers and temporary workers. Here's news of building resistance by Polish temporary workers in certain Tesco branches. www.libcom.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=64718&sid=3eaa6e69e0a7e4ccd1fb7b900c057ae6#64718Leaflets and more information here: publish.indymedia.org.uk/en/2005/08/320202.html(i'm struggling to download this pdf leaflet though at the moment). Reckon we should have discussions at the next meeting on targetting Tesco Burnley on an on-going basis with regular pickets to raise awareness on the unscrupulous goings on of Tescos as regards atypical workers, but also looking at where they source their food from, whether they are using local suppliers and so forth. On other unscrupulous multi-nationals in the area, does anyone know the situation at Hurel Hispano (old Lucus site near Althams). Last time I passed it looked like they'd changed their name again - any news anyone.

hurel hispano are part of the snecma group, 3 branches in france , 1 in burnley. most of the workforce are medium to high skill but I don't know the salaries. Now hurel are called 'Aircelle' as a fancy name derived from nacelle (the nose cowlings/panels on aircraft engines aimed at reducing noise in forward and reverse thrust). The name changed from hispano for their newly formed parent company called SAFFRON group (now the main shareholders) who are multi-national (see link below)... I knew someone who worked there at burnley branch but twas a long time ago when it were a proper aerospace company Scroll down to bottom of link page below to see mention of Burnley... www.aircelle.com/letter_from.htmq. What did the frog order at McDonald's? ... ... .... ..... ...... a. A diet croak and French flies

Love the McDonald's joke!!!
My mum worked at Lucas Electrical for 30 years or so...I think the wages back then were considered very good in comparison with other companies, plus as a child I had the opportunity to attend their annual trips to the panto and Christmas Parties, thanks to the Sports and Social Club...those were the days...
here's the reference to Burnley btw: 'Aircelle currently has a staff of 2,600 persons located at four major sites in Europe: Le Havre, Meudon and Toulouse in France, and Burnley in the United Kingdom.'

Cheers all. Hurel used to be a Lucus site so I'm told - and was a community of workers, and almost all were in the union.
They keep changing their name there - a pathetic surface tactic as if they're trying to rebrand themselves all the time and shed their unscrupulous skins.
Burnley & Padiham Community Housing to Calico are another example. Jesus H, the amount of money that goes into name changes is unbelievable.
I was once sent on as a temp to Hurel Hispano. I walked out the first day - rang the temping agency and told them it was a bloody disgrace. What I witnessed was information on redundancies and job sheding being announced over a loud speaker at this massive factory. Casual workers were the first to go. They hire and fire at will here now at Aircelle! Also, Michele do you remember that Scottish guy we met in the pub once after a meeting. He was working at Aircelle and had been sent down from a temping agency in Scotland. This was a horrendous insight - casual workers being sent from around the country to factories in Burnley - he was not happy at Aircelle from what I remember.
It was chaos - that was end of 2001 I think. The temping agency was Tempo/St James St - now massive WORKPOINT!
The Tesco's wildcat strike I'm awaiting more information on - but I reckon we should look at Tesco's Burnley and see what is going on there at next meeting.
Thanks for all this info all.
best Mitch

MEET THE NEW WALMART IN THE UK - TESCOPOLY! "Tesco controls nearly 30% of the grocery market in the UK. In 2005, the supermarket chain announced over £2 billion in profits. Gwoing evidence indicates that Tesco's success is partly based on trading practices that are having serious consequences for suppliers, farmers, overseas workers, local shops and the environment - AND HOMEWORKERES. Check out this very interesting website, and coalition of various groups, including the National Group on Homeworking, to challenge John Prescott's favourite multi-national (second perhaps only to the big six mobile phone companies). www.tescopoly.orgIt's all in the local planning, and Tesco's strategic railroading of local government planning departments (they work in a similar way to the mobile phone companies - lying in applications, pushing through appeals, pushing local government into corners with the threat of expensive appeals to get more and more of their stores built). They have central government on their side: fascinating article this one. observer.guardian.co.uk/business/story/0,6903,1577522,00.html (sorry, have to cut and paste here to view, can't seem to copy whole reference effectively)

Hiya Mitch..thanks for this...I'll take a look at those links later...on another forum I've visited there's a debate going on about Walmart and its company practises etc. Thought that might interest us in the UK too, as they have associations with ASDA now, don't they? Here's the link to the discussion on it...NB, it's a religious site so expect some religious content in some of the replies..lol. www.ldstalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5299
