www.thisislancashire.co.uk/lancashire/news/LETTOPNEWS0.htmlAnyone been reading about Smurfit on Edward St, Nelson. Been operating in Nelson for 40 years - recycles and makes packaging. They've been bought by KAPPA - a massive mulit-national packaging group - and the merger was approved by both the European Commission and various Unions: www.kappapackaging.com/DropdownMenu/About+Us/News/Smurfit+Kappa+Group.htm120 workers at Smurfit/Nelson, many of them young people with familieis, are about to loose their jobs as a result of this merger and Kappa's reorganisation. This is a frequent pattern in this area. There are many multi-nationals who own small plants (eg. George Wilkinson/Burnley, Aircelle/Safron Group and so on) and it workers in such plants are dispensed with like pawns, with little concern for the effects on their lives/their families' lives and Nelson. All they care about is profit, and restructuring is just one of their malicious tactics. How to fight this when you've weak unions, approval from the European Commission and Pendle Borough Council with it's arm twisted behind it's back by central government policy which is pro-business and multi-nationals is urr a tricky one. (any ideas anyone?) There are no jobs waiting for these skilled workers in Pendle. Also, I'd suggest there is a direct link between the increasing number of small factories owned by multi-nationals in Burnley & Pendle and the increase in casual work. The number of repossessions in Nelson is rising - there are links.
