Cancelled due to illness - apologies sent, and received in a very friendly manner - thanks Brian & Keith!
They'll be more in the future no doubt - I stayed in and did lets minutes instead so not feeling too guilty!!
This meeting is on the eve of confirmation that Smurfit, recently taken over by corporation giant Kappa is to close with the loss of 150 jobs.
Cotty & I watched the documentary 'The Corporation' last night - you're welcome to borrow Michele. This would be a very good film to show in the cafe/Burnley. It's a bit long - 2 hours - but brilliantly informative, laying bare the pernicious behaviour of greedy corporations thinking only on profit - and job losses their standard affair. It's a gripping documentary - which shows well the global links of job losses here/and sweat shops in China and elsewhere - a must see I'd say - with a positive ending of examples where people power has one through particularly on recent examples of fights against the privitisation of water.
Workers will clock off for the last time, it's expected, at the end of August 2006. This site has been operating in Nelson for 40 years. Other local businesses like the local Sandwich shop on Leeds Road, Nelson will also be affected when the trade disappears. This is bad news for Nelson where jobs are already scarce!
