LITTLE MARSDEN COMMUNITY ACTION GROUP MEETING
JULIE’S HOUSE, NELSON
WEDNESDAY 17TH MAY 2006
7pm
Present:
Lou, Julie, Elaine, Michele, Mitch
Apologies: Reg, Karen & Sky
1. Trip to Nelson Neighbourhood Action Meeting, 5pm-7pm/Marsden Community Primary School, Percy St
Julie, Mitch, Michele, Elaine and Molly attended the meeting at Marsden Primary. We all agreed in discussions afterwards that it had been well worth going, and that it was good to meet Lynne, Bushra, Rebecca and Louise who were really friendly, encouraging and helpful about our ideas and little group.
Bushra, Rebecca and Lynne offered many helpful ideas, and took some of our yellow leaflets for the Jumble Sale at St Johns Southworth in June and they were keen to support us.
Other ideas & support offered included:
Help with funding applications & progress with setting up the group
Offer of use of meeting room at Railway Street
Support for our events
Help with distributing leaflets
CRB Checks
General advice
Elaine who lives in Brierfield also learnt that there is a similar Action group over her way, and she says she will go along to their meetings too. Elaine also discovered that there is a free gym service available in Brierfield that she didn’t know about. We thought we might advertise free services like this and more in our first newsletter.
Michele has since exchanged emails with Lynne, and we’ll be forwarding a copy of these minutes to them. Unfortunately they can’t make our next weekly meeting, but Michele, Julie and hopefully Karen if she can make, will be popping into Railway Street (date to be arranged) to find out more and how we can get support from them.
Next Meeting of Neighbourhood Action Group is Wednesday, 28th June, starting 6.30pm at Marsden Community Primary School, Percy Street, Nelson.
2. Jumble Sale – 17th June, St Johns Southworth – Plans Progressing
The leaflet is now done, with feedback form on the back. Everyone seemed to like it, and Mitch will copy more of these for Saturday when we meet for trip to Brunshaw. Some discussions on for next meeting talking about distribution of leaflet, door to door, advertising, getting posters and so forth.
3. Brunshaw Action Group – Visit to Social
Michele’s done a brilliant job of arranging our visit to Brunshaw – this Saturday, 20th May. Going along are Michele, Sky, Mitch, Reg and possibly Karen. Places are booked on the event - £5 each.
As well as having a right good time, we hope to learn more about how they have organised as a group, more about the socials they organise, how they advertise, and any advice we can get. We can also ask them how they went about getting funding for their newsletters.
4. General Ideas from the Meeting
From general chats in the meeting, lots more ideas came up!
Lou mentioned the problems and dangers of people parking in the mornings and afternoons at Marsden School. She said she had mention this to the local police, but they had not yet done anything about it. Lou mentioned doing some friendly stickers to make the points, with ‘I’m a Special Person, I can Park anywhere I like’ on them, and sticking them on windscreens, as well as taking some photos of the situation with Michele or Mitch’s digital camera and making a note of car numbers. Michele came up with the idea of ‘Marsden School Sticker Campaign, “I’m a special Person, I can Park Where I like’, highlighting the dangerous parking issues around the school!
Mitch said she’d do the stickers for next week’s meeting and at next meeting we can talk about a day when we will do this – possibly Thursday or Friday 25th/26th May. All agreed the stickers were a great idea from Lou.
Elaine mentioned again about finding out about the free gym, and we had a general discussion about how information about these things and other things going on in the community doesn’t get passed around,. We talked about what we could do to help here, and putting lots of information in our newsletters in the future.
Julie mentioned again having an outdoor event in Walverden Park – definitely one for the future all agreed.
Lou is currently checking out Marsden Community Sport and Arts Centre on Percy Street, and Julie spoke very highly about it too, and Rose Taylor, the Development Officer there. Lou is looking at how we can work closely with them, advertising their events and also making good use of the sports courses and workshops they are offering.
(Marsden Community Primary School’s website is here: http://www.marsden.lancsngfl.ac.uk)
We also had a chat about the services offered at Christchurch and at some point we agreed to find out facilities there, and what would be available to us – and cost etc. It was recognised that this was quite a popular venue, centrally placed in Nelson, very mixed attracting many residents.
Shea, Mollie and Lou’s daughter joined in the meeting occasionally. Mitch asked them if they were going to have a day out somewhere what would they like to do. The vote was definitely for an outdoor centre trip, with loads of outdoor rides. Molly mentioned the Lake District. Mitch to look into Outdoor Centres and costs involved for a day in the Lake District, and other possible day trips. They like Blackpool too!
Brief chats about arrangements for Brunshaw event Saturday, and afterwards popping to see a local band in Nelson that Julie recommended. We spoke about the music scene in Nelson a bit, and how that would be an important part of our group – arranging open mike music events, publicising local bands and so on. Mitch recommended that Julie do a ‘Julie’s Music Scene’ or something like that column in our newsletters because she knows what’s going on in the area.
Julie also mentioned about her involvement in amateur dramatics group. Mitch said there were quite a few in East Lancs – she knew of one in Padiham. Talk of another idea of setting up an amateur dramatics group in Nelson in the future.
5. Agenda for next Meeting – planned for Wednesday, 24th June, Julie’s House
Ideas for agenda for next meeting were:
1. Visit to Nelson Neighbourhood Action Group – Lynne & Bushra at 120 Railway Street by Julie/Michele & Karen. For information on next step, funding possibilities, support available.
2. Marsden School Sticker Campaign – Mitch to bring Stickers with “I’m a Special Person, I can Park Where I Like” – to highlight the Dangerous Parking near the school. Arrange Day.
3. Ideas for setting up a web forum for ‘Little Marsden Community Action Group’.
4. Jumble Sale/St Johns Southworth – 17th June – Distribution of leaflets (Mitch to bring loads to meeting), door to door organising in Clover Hill, Posters advertising further afield, Radio/Local Press
5. Ideas for first newsletter, to come out after Jumble Sale.
If anyone has anything they want to add to the agenda before next week, email/phone Michele or just bring your idea to the meeting.
6. NEXT MEETING
Wednesday, 24th May, 7pm – Julie’s House.
