70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF CABLE STREET Sunday 8 October 06 Cable Street London E1 (Shadwell tube & DLR) 12noon - 4pm
We are volunteers to help out on the Unite Against Fascism stall at the 70th Anniversary Celebration of the Battle of Cable Street.
This historical event commemorates the occasion when, on 4 October 1936, the people of the East End of London prevented Sir Oswald Mosley and his British Union of Fascists from marching through Cable Street in Stepney, then a mainly Jewish area. This happened just three months after the start of the Spanish Civil War when people from all over the world went to Spain to fight General Franco and his fascists in a prelude to the Second World War. In Spain and in the East End the same slogan was used: NO PASARAN! THEY SHALL NOT PASS!
The Cable Street Group and Alternative Arts are producing this event which will take place in Cable Street and in the recreation ground behind St Georges Town Hall. The celebration will include a procession along Cable Street, street theatre, a whole series of musical performances on stage and an exhibition of photography combining historical imagery and contemporary portraits of the diverse communities that make up the East End today.
If you can help us out the event please get in touch by email or by phone in the office on 02078334916
