I don't know too much about Paul Foot, however I did read one of his books, explaining socialism, and really enjoyed it...and heard him speak at Marxism 2001. Will be greatly missed by all.

It is Stef..thanks for posting on this thread..
I should have put one or two things that I DO know about Paul however, he was a great socialist, journalist and author...he fought many cases in the courts over the years which were at the time controversial...He is well loved by many other socialists and trade union members who have met him..and highly regarded by many politicians too.

ive just found a little bit of his biography on the web - not much there, so annoying!!
he sounded like a great bloke, its a shame he has died, not many people get the chance to bring justice into the world, they are always murdered - JFK, martin luther king etc... its disgusting, the one little hope we have for justice and its taken away, why dont all the bad people sufffer and/or die like all these people that try and help others!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! he didnt support labour did he? stef LOL...we're talking 'old labour' here, before right-wing Tony got his claws into the party... Shame the biog. didn't say much, will have to find more links elsewhere...I will also do a search...you could try doing a search for Socialist Worker paper...they did a 2 page spread about him, full of tributes from the people he knew/worked with and for. It is sad that so many good people seem to be taken before the bad...justice eh!!! huh.

www.workersliberty.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=2463A more balanced article methinks by Sean Matgamna "Foot’s exposures of injustice, etc, have their own value. But in his most widely circulated writings Foot functioned not as a socialist but as a radical critic of aspects of bourgeois rule. Such things are a valuable part of socialist education but only if they are complemented by broader socialist propaganda and education. As socialist propaganda they are only as good as the context which the work of the organisation of which the author is part gives them."

Regarding Paul Foot. In that he exposed injustice and successive wrong doing by various Governments including Labour. Well and good. But Paul Foot , years ago on the wireless stated that voting Labour was like participating in necrophilia! Making love with the dead. Yet he supported and belonged to a political party that misled thousands of young or working class people in to voting Labour at election time. Well intentioned though he might be he was a danger to the working class as is the party he supported the SWP. These organisations,i.e. the Labour and the SWP both seek to control the people and seek to govern them. Where's the difference between them? I think it was Proudhon who said," Who ever seeks to govern me is my enemy". So much for Paul Foot.
