What is the nation’s favourite queer novel? Find out with the BIG GAY READ!
THE BIG GAY READ LAUNCH
Friday 26 August 2005
12.30-2pm
Manchester Central Library
Committee Room (2nd Floor)
St. Peter’s Square, Manchester
Hundreds of ground-breaking books capturing lesbian and experience have been published in recent decades – novels that have entertained, educated and literally saved lives! We want to find out which of these novels the British public cherishes above all others.
The Big Gay Read – co-ordinated by queerupnorth, Commonword, Time to Read and Manchester, Salford & Blackpool Libraries in association with BT and Bertram Library Services - is being launched at Manchester Central Library on Friday 26 August, just as Manchester sees its annual Pride celebrations begin. The launch will be hosted by performance poet, Chloe Poems, and will feature celebrities championing their favourite queer books.
The Big Gay Read features a reading list of 21 innovative lesbian/gay titles. The list features a mix of titles that span both the literary and the popular, appealing to a wide range of readers. Also launching on the 26 August is the website, www.biggayread.com, where book lovers can download the recommended reading lists, join in discussions, submit their own reviews and vote for Britain’s most loved gay book. Readers have got until February 2006 to make their decision – so get reading and voting!
The winning title will be announced at a special event during the queerupnorth international festival in May 2006.

queerupnorth International Festival venue & sponsor, Harvey Nichols presents a very special screening of the fabulous Hedwig & The Angry Inch.
Inspired by Plato’s Symposium, Hedwig tells the story of the internationally ignored song stylist who undergoes botched gender re-assignment surgery to escape Eastern Bloc Berlin as the bride of an American GI. Settled in a trailer park somewhere in Kansas and abandoned by her husband, our heroine turns to music and falls for the geeky boy next door, Tommy, who steals her songs and wins international stardom, leaving her once again with nothing. Hedwig stalks Tommy’s worldwide tour to tell her own story accompanied by her Eastern block rock ensemble, The Angry Inch.
