Excuse me, but wasn't a bit silly to hold the NAN conference on the same day as the SolFed book fair? Peter Good (TCA) Gadzooks, I did bring this up Peter at the NAN conference as Bolton is particularly handy for us and I love going to the old socialist centre there! (although I got a bloody parking ticket last year!). Bryan can explain more, but apparently there had to be some compromise to fit in with Newcastle comrades up there - it was the only date they could do. It was a great shame - the clash. As an aside, there's a superb little history of the Bolton Socialist Centre in the latest North West Labour History Journal (Bryan, I hope you're gonna give me this back!). Kropotkin spoke there once - it's a fascinating artle alluding to a period when libertarian socialists within the ILP were rather receptive to anarchist speakers. Barry or Bryan can you answer Peter's query in more detail!

Dear Peter
In answer to your comment the NAN Conference in Newcastle was arranged at the previous NAN in Wellington. The venue was only available on November 12 and the bookfair was clearly arranged much later. The clash was unavoidable. The next NAN will hopefully be at Wood Street Socialist Club At the end of January or beginning of February 2006.
Kind regards

NAN Conference Newcastle Upon Tyne. Nov 12
The Conference was well supported with a good geographical spread. Anarchists from Manchester, Bury, Burnley, Leeds, Wellington and The North East attended.
The morning session discussed working class organisation and struggle with presentations from 2 trade union militants, Dave Douglas of the NUM and Dave Chapple of the Postal Workers Union.
In the afternoon there were 2 papers presented on Mujeres Libres and Workers Collectives in Spain during the Spanish Civil War.
The next NAN will probably be on February 4th, 2006 at Wood Street Socialist Club, Bolton from 10am to 5pm.

Thanks for these notes Barry...do you intend posting them on our 'sister' ;D site Libcom? would you like me to? Whacka do, whacka day........... "What's in a kiss Have you ever wondered just what it is More perhaps than just a moment of bliss Tell me what's in a kiss. What's in a dream Is it all the things you'd like to have been All the places that you haven't yet seen Tell me what's in a dream. I know it's really rather stupid of me But I honestly don't know Every time I try to find a solution I'm surprised at how quickly I become so slow. What's in a kiss Have you ever wondered just what it is More perhaps than just one moment of bliss Tell me what's in a kiss. And any time you need a light refreshment Baby you can count on me I am your very own delicatessen Well equipped to supply you with your every need. Well what's in a kiss Have you ever wondered just what it is More perhaps than just one moment of bliss Tell me what's in a kiss". Love to Lib Com, from Gilbert xxxx

You might notice I've posted this message on the North West libcom site. My attendance at the Bradford Peace Fair (last Saturday)really unsettled me. I watched people approaching stalls run by Respect and by Green Socialists and there was an animated dialogue taking place. To my shame there was not a whisper of Anarchist alternatives to be had among the 70 stalls. It really made me aware of how much energy we use up playing games of sectarianism. And of how much of the talent in the North is isolated. I was at the original Great Manchester Conference (92?) where the NAN was originally founded. There was an awful lot of energy and optimism flying about on that day. My proposal is that we reconvene a second Great Manchester Conference. A chance to reflect on the past years and perhaps revive and reconfigure the Network. At the very least we could agree to set up a travelling stall and really make an effort to have an Anarchist presence at the growing number of fairs around the North. Accordingly, we have ring fenced £50 as a contribution to a future suitable venue. To Braver and Better Times! Peter Good (TCA)

The next NAN Conference will take place on Saturday February 4th at Wood Street Socialist Club Bolton from 10am to 5pm. Denis Pye from Bolton who has written extensively on early British socialism including the history of the Clarion Cycling Club has been invited to speak on this topic with particular reference to Tom Mann and British syndicalism. In addition to Dennis we hope to get Hilary Wainright the editor of "Red Pepper".
After successful conferences in Wellington and Newcastle we hope to develop further contacts with libertarian socialists and anarchists in Bolton.

The latest thinking is that the first NAN. The founding NAN conference was at the Manchester Town Hall in 1995. It was initiated by Jonnathan Simcock and Mike Hamilton from Derbyshire. It had representative attendance from across the North and from both affiliated and unaffiliated libertarians.
The second conference was held in Salford and was (as Knightrose claims on the libcom thread) organised mainly by his Manchester 'affinity group' Subversion. Sol Fed had, I understand, been approached to co-organise this event but declined. The Salford Conference was well organised, well attended (about 70), and impressive. Discussions ranged around the dockers' dispute, the anti-JSA campaign (a speaker came from Edinburgh) and resistance to a local motorway.
Out of this conference came, I believe, a serious anti-JSA campaign in the North, particularly the North West. In respect of the dockers' dispute, which was already well underway, we were supportive. Though the NAN provided a base to work through I have no hestitation in saying, and have always said, the initiative for the anti-JSA campaign in the North West came mainly from the Subversion 'affinity group' to which Knighrose belonged in Manchester. In other parts of the country the innitiative came from Groundswell in Oxford, a group in Brighton and of course the Ediburgh group.
Other groups in Bury, Oldham, Tameside and Burnley (thanks to Reg) joined in later and AF in Merseyside got involved. Soon a system of '3-strikes-and-your-out' was operating against various overzealous dole managers. It has been argued that the NAN did not operate the anti-JSA campaign as an organisation. This may be true but it helped facilitiate this campaign.
What was sad at the time, and Knightrose on the libcom 'Derilect Politics' thread neglects mention it, is that a section of this Salford NAN from Leeds, but backed by a prominent member of Sol Fed in Manchester, began a process for the exclusion of Subversion on grounds that it was not a bonafide 'anarchist group'. This was followed up at later conferences in Shefield and Leeds. It is ironic now to think of it, but at that time I, Derek Pattison, John L, AF and others, who AF would now probably dismiss as being politically unreliable, had to unite to prevent a hachet job being done on the Subversion 'affinity group' by Sol Fed and others who have since moved on.

Thanks Barry, see you there. I've been reading a little of Rudolph Rocker on the Spanish Civil War so am a little more clued up.
Thanks also for popping over to our anarchist do - the Durruti mugs are superb - I particularly like the quote at the top 'A new world in our hearts'.
tara for now.

Looking forward to meeting Peter Moore particularly, although methinks I may not be his favourite person as he's chasing me for overdue member dues at the moment! So I'll be attending with a paper bag over me head! I support the IWW, but they seem a little distant from Burnley at the moment. Very much looking forward to hearing what he has to say. best Mitch

CHANGE IN THE AGENDA; PEDRO WILL COME THE BOLTON SOCIALIST CLUB AT 12 NOON TILL 1PM. NOT AT 2pm as it says on the Agenda.
As a special favour and in solidarity with other local anti-Francoists Pedro has today agreed to come to the NAN meeting tomorrow. Pedro who now lives in Bolton, is 85 years-old and he and his family were members of the CNT in the 1930s. He rarely attends meetings owing to illhealth, but on this occasion for us he has decided to come out. We hope the movement will, in this year of homage to the victims to the victims of Franco, turn out and support him.
