Taken from the online edition of today's Burnley Express:
"Day of protest
THROW your weight behind this weekend's day of protest to show health bosses that we will not accept any closure of emergency services at Burnley General Hospital.
East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is currently conducting a radical review of services and has put forward five options for change, which include the closure of the accident and emergency department, intensive care and high dependency facilities at Burnley.
Saturday is a dedicated day of action as part of the Save Our Hospital campaign and kicks off with the Express-backed protest march. Organised by Coun. Gordon Birtwistle, the "people's march" will leave the car park opposite Queen's Park at 10-30 a.m., continue down Belvedere Road and along Yorkshire Street, culminating at the bandstand in St James's Street.
Coun. Birtwistle will then thank people for taking the time to support the campaign.
This will be followed by a march and rally, organised by Unison, in the town's Peace Garden.
Protesters are being urged to gather there before the march around the town centre.
It will leave at approximately 11 a.m. and will return to the Peace Garden where speakers will issue a rallying call to the public to keep up the pressure on hospital bosses.Speakers include Burnley MP Mrs Kitty Ussher, Pendle MP Gordon Prentice, Hyndburn MP Greg Pope, Rossendale MP Janet Anderson, Burnley Borough Council leader Coun. Stuart Caddy, Pendle Council leader Coun. Alan Davies and Rossendale Borough Council leader Coun. Duncan Ruddick as well as representatives of the various health service unions such as Unison and the Royal College of Nursing.
29 November 2005."

I was speaking with my sister tonight, a midwife at Burnley General Hospital. She says the morale of the staff is at an all time low...wage negotiations are terrible, wards are closing in many departments, not only in Burnley but also in Nelson, Airedale hospital is also in danger of losing its A&E department to Blackburn, making the nearest A&E departments around here either Blackburn or Bradford or Manchester. The number of 'blue light' ambulances is set to be cut, on the ward on which she works they have even removed every other strip light to save on the electricity bills and staff are having to be accountable for everything they use, even down to pens!!!
I hope that as many of us as possible can support the march and rally on Saturday and sign the petitions which have been circulating around the local hospitals/health centres and doctors' surgeries in the region...
