‘Burnley Voice’ Newsletter
Minutes of meeting
29th June 2006
Held at Jim’s house.
Attended: Jim, Mitch, Michele, Eileen, Les, Reg.
Items discussed:
1. Name of the Newsletter.
2. Format/Style and frequency of production of Newsletter.
3. Cost of obtaining paper/printing Newsletter.
4. Topics of discussion to be included in the Newsletter.
1. The name of the Newsletter would be altered according to the areas which we intended to cover, Burnley, Pendle and possibly Rossendale. It was suggested that we use the name ‘North East Lancs. Voice’, however on the journey home it was suggested that it may be difficult to distribute copies of the newsletter any further than Burnley and Pendle, or to obtain suitable articles covering areas outside of those Boroughs, so the name could possibly be altered to ‘Burnley and Pendle Voice/s’.
2. It was decided that the Newsletter would be made up from 2 sheets of A4 paper, thus having 4 pages and would be printed in B/W, to cut down printing costs. It would initially be produced quarterly, so that articles could be researched fully. It was suggested that in addition to ‘wordy’ articles, we contact Les Hyatt with regard to producing cartoon strips of a satirical nature, and that we include photographs.
3. Mitch would look into obtaining 2 reams of paper from Morrisons as this was cheaper than other stores named at the meeting. Any other quotes for cost of paper would be considered in the future also.
4. Topics for discussion within the Newsletter would include the following:
• Charges applied for removal of unwanted household goods from properties in Burnley.
• Towneley School.
• Les and Jim’s ‘Duckett’s Corner’.
• Offshoots news and news of allotments/gardening projects.
• Brunshaw Action Group News.
• Advertisements for Rock Lane Café and various pubs/venues across the boroughs in which the newsletters will be available to the public.
• Towneley Hall admission charges.
• Car parking charges.
• Little Marsden Community Action Group news and news of other Pendle Action Groups.
• ‘Make it Last..’ recycling ideas for bathroom suites, highlighting the cost to the environment of frequently replacing bathroom suites and other household goods. Possibility of producing a cartoon strip to accompany this.
• ‘Did you know?’ section highlighting dodgy Government deals etc.
• P.R.I.S.M. and T.A.M. news.
• The accountability of Local Government.
• Website addresses for The Burnley Voice and Little Marsden C.A.G. and others.
• Recipes, to encourage people to stop purchasing ready made meals and produce their own healthier versions at a fraction of the cost.
• Making the Town Hall and the Mechanics Institute open to the public.
• Encouraging groups to hire out local venues such as church halls rather than hiring out Turf Moor Football Club for major events/meetings.
• ‘What’s Changed?’ Reprint certain articles from the original editions of the B.Voice and contrast the situations highlighted then to what the situation is now in those same areas..has anything changed/issues dealt with or are there still problems?
• Inequality of health service provision across the North/South divide. Lower life expectancy rate in the North.
• N.H.S. issues in general.
• Burnley Planning Department ‘farce’, in cartoon strip style.
• Increase in debt and inflated house prices/increased interest rates/Government not longer in control of the Bank of England.
• ‘Bad’ Landlord practices.
• Inadequate provision of dog loos in certain areas in the boroughs.
Initial articles to be submitted at the next planning meeting at Jim’s house in 2 weeks time, Thursday 13th July, 8pm.
Also suggested that we apply for a stall at various events across the Boroughs..the Green Fair for example.
