Two days ago on Ch.4 News at 7pm. I heard the P.M. announce joyfully that our princelings , in line to the throne, could marry ,"Catholics".
If I understand aright, the Telegraph mentions that the move was later blocked by the C.of E.!
Mr Cameron, shows his shallow grasp of the matter when he uses the term Catholic! 'CATHOLICS', have never been prevented from marrying in to the Royal Family and for very good and cogent reasons it was members of the Holy Roman Church, Romanists! who were barred. All british monarchs over the last 1200 years have been nominally Catholic, even now the C.of E, claims Catholicity! Roman Catholics did not accept the status quo in England, of Monarch, of Lords and House of Commons, as the authority within the Country! Preferring to give their allegiance to the Papacy who in turn was the head not only of the newly formed Holy Roman Church, but the sovereign head of a large state in Northern Italy, with Rome for a Capital . On top of which he claimed temporal sovereignty over all secular monarchs through out Europe. As far as the Government was concerned they owed allegiance to a foreign Leader! When this foreign leader interfered in English politics and tried to engineer a coup against Elizabeth I, to coincide with an invasion by the Spanish Army, twice,(1588 and 1597) and when we consider that the Spanish Monarch was one of the most repressive monarchs in Europe, besides which when the pope instructed his followers to refuse allegiance to the English State, we can see why England accepted the Pope's refusal of Communion with the English Church! Not only that but a conspiracy of Romanists even tried to eradicate the entire establishment within the country by blowing up the three Estates, King, Lords and Commons. This state of war between the Papacy and the English lasted for over 50 yrs. Let's face it, they were feared as deeply as either the N.K.V.D or the Gestapo, in later times.
It was unfortunate that when, about 100 yrs later (1688,) a Roman Catholic King, James II, tried to bring freedom of worship in this country, he did so when the King of France was slaughtering Calvinist protestants all over France. Driving them from their homes, confiscating their children, refusing them freedom of worship and forcibly converting them to Romanism. The alternative being the gallows or the gallies. The result was that a group of plotters amongst the aristocracy led a coup and changed the English monarchy and paid for an army of occupation some 10,000 Continental protestant soldiers. In 1714 on the death of the last Stuart Queen,
a panic set in amongst the Junta, or dictatorship who ruled England and the choice was made to a German Duke, the Duke of Brunswick and Elector of Hanover! He was about the fortieth in line to the English Throne!
The Act of Succession 1701 the right to the throne went to the descendants of Princess Sophia, Electress of Hanover and it was her son, George the Elector in 1714, who succeeded to the English throne. he was not allowed any real authority and both he and his successors knew how long the tether was and how strong the leash!George was a kept man, as are today's royalty, he kept quiet and earned his pension. In fact England has been virtually a republic since 1714.
